The 2011 Ireland Medal has been awarded to Professor Linda Quan MD (USA) for her work in the fields of drowning prevention and resuscitation.

Dr. Francesco Pia is a psychologist, President of Pia Enterprises, and a water safety and lifeguard advisor to the American Red Cross. He is associated with concepts such as Distress versus Drowning signals, and the Instinctive Drowning Response (IDR). (1 hour presentation)

Dr. Robert Stallman has had a long career in swimming and is a member of the Norwegian School of Sports Science. He has written extensively on swimming and drowning prevention.

Dr. Ana Catarina Queiroga is a Microbiologist with a PhD in Biology. Since 2006 Catarina has been engaged in several water lifesaving-related projects being an active member of the World Water Safety Conference 2007 Organizing Committee. For the last 5 years Catarina has been teaching Risk Assessment, Human Resources Management and Systemic Coordination in the Professional Water Safety Course at Social Economy Professional School (Portugal). From 2009 she has been the Chief Operating Officer at the same school, and Director and Founder of +Saúde.Qoop – a workgroup responsible for the promotion of health and well being in the school and surrounding environment.

Since retiring from the Royal Air Force, Wing Commander Michael Fonfe has become immersed in swimming and drowning prevention alongside of his wife Christine who is the founder of the Sri Lanka Women’s Swimming Project. He is currently writing a swimming instruction manual for persons with low literacy.

Luis Miguel Pascual-Gomez trained as a Primary School Teacher but works in industry management. He is a swimming and lifesaving instructor and Teaching Manager with the Segovia Life Saving School, Spain and co-author of articles on drowning prevention and rescue in the handbook on Drowning.

Barbara Kusyanto is Chief Administrative Officer, Lifesaving Society Alberta & Northwest Territories. She has a wide experience with public drowning prevention, education and training programme development, and rescue strategies.
The Thursday discussion topic will be Lifesaving Research.

Jan Holden has over 30 years experience as a mental health counsellor and therapist and is Professor of Counseling at the University of North Texas. She has been President of the International Association for Near-Death Studies and is currently Editor of its Journal of Near-Death Studies.

Joost Bierens is an anaesthetist, and former intensive care and emergency physician, from the Netherlands. Being a lifeguard during his medical studies, he published a large number of scientific papers and book chapters on drowning, completed a PhD thesis on drowning (‘Drowning in the Netherlands’; 1996) and coordinated the publication of the first and revised second edition of The Handbook on Drowning. He is medical advisor to the Maatschappij tot Redding van Drenkelingen (founded in 1767) and the Royal Dutch Life Boat Institute.
